Under the Highways Act 1980, all local authorities have an obligation to ensure the pavements that you walk on are well maintained and free of defects.
They have to undertake regular inspections and, if they spot a defect, repairs must be done reasonably quickly. As a general rule, if a damaged pavement has a tripping edge of more than 1 inch, the local authority should have repaired it.
